Machine safety quote checklist: equipment and documentation

October 31, 2026  ·  3 minute read

A useful machine-safety quotation starts with the machine, the task and the access points. A light curtain part number alone does not establish that the complete safeguarding arrangement is suitable. Collect the following information before requesting ISB light curtains, press brake guarding or related safety equipment.

Identify the machine and the work

Send the manufacturer, model, serial number and available manuals or electrical drawings. Explain the normal production task, setup and maintenance access, the material being processed and the reason for the proposed change. Describe existing guards, interlocks and controls without assuming they can be reused.

Describe every access point

Include photographs and a dimensioned layout showing the opening, surrounding barriers, operator position and other ways someone could reach or enter the area. Identify whether a person could remain inside after crossing the proposed protective field. Avoid sending confidential production drawings unless you are authorised to share them.

Collect stopping and control information

Provide existing stopping-time measurement reports, control drawings and the current safeguard part numbers where available. Mark missing or estimated inputs clearly. The proposed arrangement needs application review; a planning calculation is not a commissioning record or an approval to operate.

Document vibration and the environment

If vibration is a concern, describe where it occurs, when it occurs and the proposed mounting position. Include measured vibration information if available, ambient temperature, contamination, washdown and nearby process effects. Ask for the exact model documentation and mounting requirements rather than treating a general ruggedness claim as evidence for the application.

Ask for the right documents

Request current model-specific datasheets, installation instructions, declared ratings and available conformity documentation. Have the supplier identify the quoted emitter and receiver, cables, brackets, mirrors and control interfaces. Ask which items and services are excluded and who is responsible for installation, integration, validation and any required independent review.

Ontario projects: include the review scope early

Ontario guidance identifies light curtains, area scanners and interlocked barriers among the protective elements relevant to its pre-start review framework. Whether a particular installation needs a review or qualifies for an exemption depends on the circumstances. Agree the assessment scope with an appropriately qualified reviewer before relying on a device selection or supplier statement.

See the official Ontario pre-start review guidance and machinery safeguarding guidance. For manufacturer context, read Wintriss light-curtain application guidance; it discusses application considerations and does not approve a specific installation.

Prepare the commercial request

Include the destination country and delivery city, quantity, required timing and whether the enquiry is for replacement parts or a complete safeguarding project. Ask the quotation to state currency, delivery scope, documentation, availability and the application checks still outstanding.

Review machine safety and press brake guarding and the machine safety planning selector, then send your machine-safety enquiry. For overseas requirements, use international industrial supply enquiries. Final selection and use require review of the complete machine and its application.
